Music

At Heritage music plays an important role and helps to implement the schools core values of pride, ambition and aspiration. This is implemented through the work done with pupils in lessons and during extra-curricular sessions. Music has proven to improve pupils’ mental health and wellbeing as well as helping pupils build confidence and resilience through the correct guidance and experiences. In music we have a well-resourced classroom with several instruments, such as keyboards, drum and guitars. We have 3 practice rooms for pupils to use in lesson and during extra-curricular clubs. My aim for all pupils whether they leave the subject during KS3 or KS4 with an appreciation and understanding of the subject, as well as being able to make use of the many transferable skills taught within music, such as teamwork, resilience, determination, collaboration and problem solving. Pupils who choose to pursue the subject further should hope to leave with an understanding of different music genres, how to improve as a musician, the ability to self-reflect and a good knowledge of the creative industries.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

Music at Key Stage 4 is a BTEC Tech Award qualification meaning that the qualification is based entirely on coursework. The course is taught through 3 units of work, each of which aim to teach a variety of topics and skills within music and to develop pupil’s musical abilities so they’re ready to take music further in education or as a hobby. Unit 1 – Exploring Music Products and Style encourages pupils to research and learn about several different genres across music, pupils are encouraged to analyse, compose and perform these genres to provide evidence for their coursework. Unit 2 – Music Skills Development helps and guides pupils to improve their musical abilities through two of the three pathways (Performance, Composition or Production) and provides them with the knowledge of the professional and personal skills needed to succeed as a musician. Unit 3 is a controlled assessment, where pupil’s will be given a task, similar to a job commission within the music industry and will be asked to perform the task to the best of their abilities using the knowledge and skills gained from Units 1 and 2. The task can be anything from creating a cover version of a song and transforming it into a different genre or planning and performing a concert with a given theme.
