Ethos

Heritage High School believes that behaviour strongly impacts on the effectiveness of teaching, learning and progress.  Therefore, the school aims to create a positive climate for learning where all students are supported and given the best opportunity to succeed. Good behaviour is an expectation and should be recognised, acknowledged and promoted by all.

We endeavour to develop our students lives for the better and believe that every student is important and needs to be listened to. We work together to make a life-changing difference to students both academically and pastorally.

We aim to inspire our students to achieve, transform and engage. We encourage them to develop life skills that will increase aspirations and success within society enabling our students to become well educated, well rounded citizens who fulfil their potential.

1. Appreciation, Recognition, Rewards

We are very much trying to build intrinsic motivation with students: staff will aim to use rewards after a student has done something good rather than as a motivator to do something good.

  • We promote a praise culture where we give regular verbal praise to
  • The school promotes a system for rewarding students who try hard, show commitment, and demonstrate clear improvement and progress. Our staff use a variety of methods to recognise, celebrate and reward students for their effort and achievement and to praise those who meet our high expectations. For example:

Points

Reward/Appreciation

1 Point

Upholding the School’s values

2 Points

Star of the lesson

2 Points

A postcard home, written letter of commendation or a reward telephone call for substantial achievement or continued, impressive effort:

3 Points

For excellent or vastly           improved attendance over a term

4 Points

For excellent punctuality over a term – being in the right place at the right time

Recognition of students’ effort and progress is fundamental to building a positive ethos. They should be balanced against the use of the behaviour system and corrections. It is expected that staff issue positive recognition and sanctions in the ratio of 5:1 approximately.

Students will be rewarded for using the library and reading regularly to encourage the development of their vocabulary, their reading fluency and to raise the profile of and importance of reading for pleasure.
