Heritage High Student Leadership Programme

Heritage High School’s leadership programme introduces students to the principles of leadership whilst enabling them to work on the practicalities of what this means in a school. The programme builds the necessary skills, confidence and motivation to engage directly in the development of our students.

Effective student leadership will

  • Recognise that students have logical perspectives and opinions on issues that matter in the classroom, in the school and wider communities.
  • Give students an active role enabling them to influence decisions about issues as well as in the implementation of decisions.
  • Enable students to participate as active young citizens.

There is much evidence to suggest that when students engage with student leadership programmes, they have a positive impact and their capacity for learning increases.

There are four specific aims of the Student Leadership programme at Heritage High School:

  • To benefit the school community via the experiences, ideas and skills that our students bring.
  • To provide opportunities to develop leadership skills through a variety of inspiring and challenging projects which impact positively on learning, our environment, the wellbeing of students at Heritage High School and of those in our local, national and international communities.
  • To empower students to work in partnership with staff and the local community towards shared goals.
  • To prepare students for future academic and individual challenges and for achieving personal and professional excellence beyond their time at Heritage High School.

At the heart of our student leadership programme are our school values.

  • Ambition: we maximise our potential through striving for excellence.
  • Teamwork: we give 100% effort to working together to achieve a common goal.
  • Honesty: we are respectfully open about our successes and areas for growth.
  • Kindness: we display kindness and humility for the benefit of all.

Students are invited to apply for the programme at the start of the academic year, through a thorough selection process and training day. Once fully equipped our leaders are divided into 4 groups that represent the school values. Their focus for the year to contribute positively to the school, local, national and international communities whilst developing robust interpersonal skills within a safe and nurturing environment.

Project work includes:

  • Charity work through fundraising, raising awareness and education.
  • Community work raising the profile of Heritage High and supporting the excellent work of our local communities.
  • Student Newspaper and social networking.
  • Student Voice, impacting positively on school improvement.

Students who complete a year in post will attend the annual graduation event and will be awarded for their contribution to their specific group. Students have the opportunity to complete 4 years on the leadership programme contributing to all 4 school value groups. These students will be recognised for their exceptional contribution to the school by being awarded the prestigious Senior Student Leader Award.
