Modern Foreign Languages

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.  If you talk to him in his own language, it goes to his heart.”  Nelson Mandela.

At Heritage High School, students in Year 7 study Spanish and students in Years 8-11 study one of two languages, French or Spanish, guided by specialist teachers. Lessons take place in well-equipped classrooms and we also have access to laptops to enhance language learning through the use of online and interactive programmes. We believe that all students should have interesting and varied language lessons and students are encouraged to be creative in their use of French or Spanish.  Students will also explore cultural aspects through activities such as French breakfasts and Spanish tapas tasting or learning about customs and traditions in French and Spanish speaking countries.  Furthermore, we believe that the trips to France and Spain are an important part of language learning as well as the development of cultural understanding. In previous years, we have organised trips to France and Spain where students enjoyed a variety of cultural activities including pancake making, a trip to a chocolate factory, beach games and competitions whilst away.  We are looking forward to launching a new Spanish trip to Benalmádena later this academic year, where students will visit the culturally diverse cities of Málaga and Granada.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

A different language is a different vision of life.’ Frederico Felini.

In Year 7, students have 3 lessons of Spanish per fortnight.  The first half term is used to ensure all students familiarise themselves with the basics as well as allowing those with prior knowledge of language learning to expand upon their previous learning.  Lessons then move on to explore family, school, hobbies, and a cultural unit at the end of the year.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

“One language sets you a corridor for life.  Two languages open every door along the way.”  Frank Smith.

Students have 5 lessons per fortnight in Year 10 and 11. French and Spanish use the AQA exam specification. At the end of Year11 students will complete exams in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The four skills are equally weighed.

In both languages the topics include three main themes: identity and culture, local, national, international and global areas of interest and current and future study and employment. Lessons expand on a variety of key skills such as grammar and translation work, acquired in KS3, incorporating the use of IT, videos, authentic materials, including cultural elements such as television, media and music.
