Maths

At Heritage High School we aim to develop skills and processes to use maths within everyday life. Students will be provided with challenge and choice in their learning to see the development of confidence, a willingness to learn and interest in the various aspects of mathematics. Mathematical experiences should allow for independence with opportunity to grapple with problems and persevere in challenge, hence, creating resilient learners.

We are also committed to developing our curriculum not only to incorporate current changes to the GCSE, and embrace current research into effective teaching methods that best meets the needs of the learners at Heritage. We follow a 5-year scheme of learning mapped out across the time frame to ensure all areas of the national curriculum are taught, developed and further embedded.

Years 7, 8 and 9

We have moved to a themed based curriculum in 2022 where areas of mathematics are grouped accordingly. For example, within addition and subtraction we will cover skills of perimeter, averages, and decimals. Within Y7 and Y8 classes are taught in ability sets however the curriculum for the majority is common core with classes completing skills to varying levels of depth dependant on ability. Sets are regularly reviewed to ensure students are placed according to their need.

Students are assessed using cumulative topic-based assessments linked to the themes covered so far.

Students are expected to consolidate work done in class by completing homework which is regularly set in both paper and online form.

Years 10

Students are taught in groups matched to their ability with two schemes running alongside each other covering the same topic but to the level of the class. The entire scheme is mapped out to ensure students build upon prior learning whilst being given opportunity for mapped recall of skills.

Students are assessed using modified GCSE papers covering the course so far allowing us to track progress and create question level analysis unique to the student.

Students are expected to consolidate work done in class by completing homework which is regularly set in both paper and online form.

Year 11

Students are taught as above for year 9 and 10 with the course expected to be completed by the end of half term 3. This allows for focussed revision following the first set of mocks.

Students are assessed using full GCSE papers and will sit as per their final exam 3 x 90 minute papers each worth 80 marks. Paper 1 is non calculator. Paper 2 and 3 permit the use of a scientific calculator.
