Geography

The Humanities Curriculum Area is built around a strong team of dedicated and experienced staff who share an on-going commitment to quality teaching and the improvement of standards. We strongly believe that the humanities form the very basis of what it is to be a balanced and conscientious individual and through our compassionate and supportive team we strive to deliver a broad curriculum that encapsulates the World’s story of past, present and future. Through the study of Geography, we look to not only equip our students with knowledge of the world around them but also equip them with the necessary skills to become inquisitive and rational human beings. A powerful Geography curriculum enables students to explore the world around them and discover their path within an ever-changing planet. Throughout KS3 and KS4 all students get to explore both physical elements of Geography, as well as human elements.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

At KS3, students cover a wide range of topics that encapsulate the breadth of a powerful geography curriculum. In Year 7 for example, students will discover the significance of tourism to the global economy, its impacts, and how this could be mitigated in the future. We do not shy away from map skills in Geography, either. From Year 7 students will be using their mathematical knowledge of scale to find locations on maps using 4and 6 figure grid references. In Year 8, students begin their year looking at sustainable cities and how out planet is making efforts to become more sustainable, whilst also recognising the economic, social and environmental implications of change. Year 8 also sees the introduction of a topic on global development. This unit will allow students to explore the consequences of fast fashion in other countries, as well as the environmental implications for our planet. In Year 9, students get to expand their knowledge into greater depths when looking at glaciers and rivers. The rivers unit is a key part of the GCSE curriculum, and the introduction in Year 9 ensure students gain a broad understanding of the topic before studying it in more depth.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

At GCSE students are taught the AQA specification. This involves 3 exam papers which each focus on an element of deeoer geographical knowledge. Paper 1 focuses on physical geography, with topics on; natural hazards; global ecosystems; rivers & coasts. Paper 2 focuses on human elements of geography, looking at; urban development and migration; the changing economic world; and how we manage our planet’s resources. Paper 3 aims to put all students’ knowledge into practise. This paper is based on ‘Geographical Investigations’ – where students will directly use their own fieldwork research to present data and draw conclusions.

As part of the KS4 curriculum, students get to visit Snowdonia National Park in Wales to undertake their Geographical Investigations study.
